COLOMBO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- One of Sri Lanka's leading private telecommunication providers, Dialog, demonstrated 5G technology for the first time in South Asia on Tuesday, state media has reported.
5G will pave way for next generation wireless connectivity with speeds in excess of 35 Gbps (Gigabits per second).
The ground-breaking 5G technology capability trial was carried out by Dialog Axiata with technology partners Ericsson and Huawei at the Dialog Iconic in Colombo.
The demonstration established the capabilities of 5G technology to deliver throughputs in excess of 35 Gbps on the 5G Radio (Air) Interface.
This will set a solid foundation for the future evolution of the nation's broadband connectivity to a technology generation well ahead of South Asia, state media reported.
5G connectivity offers ultra-low latency, which will enable major breakthroughs in areas such as robotics, remote surgery, autonomous transport and next generation entertainment.
"This 5G trial is a yet another milestone in our journey towards offering Gigabit speeds with near zero latency that will deliver next generation Broadband and enable industrial applications such as autonomous manufacturing and robotics," Dialog Axiata Group Chief Executive Supun Weerasinghe said.

MOSCOW, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Russia's incumbent president and independent candidate Vladimir Putin named three co-chairs of his presidential campaign team Wednesday, local media reported.
They are Alexander Rumyantsev, General Director of the Dmitry Rogachev National Research Center for pediatric hematology, oncology and immunology; Sergei Kogogin, CEO of truck maker KAMAZ; and Yelena Shmelyova, head of the Sirius Education Center for gifted children.
The co-chairs and all other team members will work as unpaid volunteers.
Putin's website, reception center and hotline will be set up in the coming days, Shmelyova said.
Putin's election fund had received more than 400 million rubles (about 7 million U.S. dollars) as of Jan. 5, the highest of all the candidates, according to the Russian Central Election Commission.
In early December, Putin announced his intention to run for his fourth term in the presidential election slated for March 18, 2018.
He is widely expected to win by a landslide as he enjoys much higher approval rating than his rivals.
China's box-office revenues surged in 2017 after slowing sharply the preceding year, as the world's second-largest movie market edges closer to overtaking the US.
Ticket revenue grew 13.45 percent to 55.9 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) on the mainland in 2017, more than triple 2016's growth rate, Xinhua news agency reported late Tuesday, citing data from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television).
